PURPOSE:To vary the focus position of an optical waveguide lens at a high speed by using an optical waveguide, the optical waveguide lens provided to part of it, and a means which converts the propagation mode of waveguide light traveling to the optical waveguide lens. CONSTITUTION:The element consists of the optical waveguide 2, optical waveguide lens 3 provided to part of it, and the means 4 which converts the propagation modes of waveguide light beams 10 and 11 traveling to the lens 3. The waveguide light 11 travels to the lens 3 to be focused like convergent light 12 when no voltage is impressed to the mode converting means, e.g. comb-shaped electrode part 4, and the focal length is, for example, 15mm., but when a voltage is impressed to the electrode part 4, the mode conversion of the waveguide light 10 is caused and the focal length is extended to about 100mm.. In this case, various means for converting the propagation modes of the waveguide light beams 10 and 11 are usable. Consequently, the focal length is varied largely at a high speed and the element is used for a head of optical information processing, etc. |
