PURPOSE:To provide a novel herbicide containing a specific carboxylic acid derivative as an active component, and exhibiting rapid and high herbicidal activity especially by foliar treatment, particularly against various annual weeds. CONSTITUTION:The objective herbicide contains one or more carboxylic acid derivatives of formula I [R<1> is 1-15C aliphatic hydrocarbon group; R<2>-R<4> are H, halogen or 1-7C hydrocarbon group; R<5> is -YR<6> (Y is O or S; R<6> is H or 1-10C hydrocarbon group) or amino group of formula II (R<7> and R<8> are same as R<6> or R<7> and R<8> together form a ring) X is halogen or cyano] having both hydrophilic acid oleophilic properties, or their functional salts. The compound is preferably the one having hydrophobic parameter Rm of -1.5-1.5 because of its high herbicidal activity and characteristic rapid activity, and the compound can be prepared e.g. by the addition reaction of the compound of formula IIIwith the compound of formula IV (R<3>-R<4> is halogen molecule such as Cl2 or H molecule).
