NEW MATERIAL:Androsta-1,4,11(12)-triene-3,17-dione of formula I . USE:A synthetic intermediate of steroidal drugs such as sexual hormone or adrenocrotical hormone. PREPARATION:12-Hydroxyandrosta-1,4-diene-3,17-dione of formula II is, preferably dissolved in a solvent such as pyridine and its sulfonation is effected by adding 1-2 molar amount, per mole of the dione, of a sulfonyl chloride of the formula: RSO2Cl (R is alkyl) to give a sulfonate of formula III (the wavy line shows that the hydroxyl or RSO2O is either alpha-configuration or beta-configuration). Then the product is subjected to desulfonation to give the objective compound of formula I .
