PURPOSE:To produce acetic acid without producing peroxide by-product, with small energy consumption, using an inexpensive catalyst, by contacting a mixed gas composed mainly of chlorinated ethane and oxygen at a specific temperature with a Pd catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A nearly equimolar mixture of a chlorinated ethane (e. g. ethyl chloride) and O2 is made to contact with a Pd catalyst at 100-250 deg.C (preferably 100-200 deg.C) and 0-10kg/cm<2>G at a space velocity of 50-500 to obtain acetic acid. The palladium catalyst can be prepared by impregnating an aqueous solution of palladium chloride in a carrier such as silica gel, and drying the silica gel containing the aqueous solution at normal temperature -100 deg.C. EFFECT:Since acetic acid can be produced from natural gas, etc. containing ethylene without cracking the ethane to a low molecular weight compound, the energy can be saved. The process can be carried without using expensive rhodium catalyst. |
