Answering system including a generator 5 of periodic meter pulses, preferably rapid-fire, characterised in that it is situated in the exchange for connecting a customer, public kiosk 1 or test device 3 which issues test calls to the said emitter in order to check proper operation of the equipment for retransmission 2 and for reception 1 or 3 of the meter pulses emitted by the said generator without cluttering the circuits 6 and the equipment of the remote exchanges 7, 8, 9 with non-profitable test traffic. The said emitter answerer is placed downstream of an outgoing junction unit 4 which endows it with universality of use since it operates according to a standardised code for circuit 6. The number of pulses sent upstream can be programmed and, in this case, it orders the freeing of the telephone link after emitting the last pulse. <IMAGE>
