In the severing of a glass strand, to prevent the occurrence of a residual glass strand and therefore to achieve complete severing of the glass strand with a neat cut, it is proposed according to the invention that the two uppermost cutting elements (2', 2''), and possibly one or more of the cutting elements (2') located below these, experience, shortly before the complete severing of the glass strand, a rapid advance with respect to the remaining cutting elements. The opening of the cutting elements (2, 2', 2'') is also carried out with variable speed. The thickness of the rapidly advancing cutting element or cutting elements (2', 2'') is dimensioned so as to be smaller than that of the rest of the cutting elements (2).
