Process for cultivating and selecting somatic hybrids in which the fusion products which have been obtained by fusing the protoplasts of different parent plants and have been mechanically isolated are cultivated together with protoplasts of an auxotrophic cell line as nurse culture whose medium contains the required additive which is essential for the auxotrophic cells, and the resulting hybrid cell cultures are selected by allowing the auxotrophic nurse cell cultures to die by removing the essential additive in the medium. Rapid development with 100% reliability is achieved in the case of somatic hybrid cultures, and it is possible for the first time to combine any desired wild type and to regenerate the resulting hybrid.
