The invention relates to a code input unit for encryption and decryption devices in secret data transmission. A high degree of protection against misuse is achieved by storing the codes in electronic form, i.e. mechanical code media (e.g. punched tape) are no longer required. Thus, even operating staff no longer have access to code information and furthermore unauthorised reading-out of the codes can subsequently be revealed through monitoring procedures.
