The multiple focal point X-ray tube has a single glow wire (31) that is located between two halves (27,29) of a cathode control cylinder. When the wire is heated an electron stream (25) is generated that input onto the surface of an anode (21). The anode (21) is produced of tungsten or a tungsten alloy and may either be fixed or may be rotated. The wire is insulated from both halves of the cylinder. The two halves of the cylinder are coupled to two bias voltage sources and the coil is supplied by a pulse driver stage. The focal point range of the emission of the anode surface is controlled by varying the relative levels of the bias voltage.
