The present invention relates to a traffic signal, particularly for use as a three-colour traffic light for controlling the movements of motor vehicles. This traffic signal is characterised in that it comprises a gas discharge lamp 1 forming a flat serpentine grid with adjacent parallel lengths 5 and emitting, when excited, a light radiation of a predetermined colour dependent upon the gas contained therein, and, behind this discharge lamp, a panel 7 made of a material of the same colour as that of the light radiation emitted by the discharge lamp 1, which diffuses the light emitted by the lamp so as to create, behind the lamp, a continuous luminous field. <IMAGE>
