Rimmed steel is produced from molten steel having a carbon content less than 0À1% by weight by pouring the molten steel into a mould, adding vanadium to the melt during or before the pouring so as to provide a vanadium content of 0À01-0À02% by weight in the casting and adding aluminium to the steel in the mould to provide a final average aluminium content not greater than 0À02% by weight. The vanadium may be added to a ladle or tundish from which the steel is poured into the mould. The resulting steel, characterised by retarded ageing, may have a composition:- V 0À01 - 0À02% Al 0À005 - 0À2% C up to 0À10% Fe the balance |
