PURPOSE:To obtain a plastic optical fiber with remarkably superior optical transmission characteristics, by spinning a core contg. a specified polymer as the principal component and a fluorine-contg. copolymer having a lower refractive index than the core and contg. said specified polymer as a sheath component. CONSTITUTION:A plastic optical fiber consisting of a methyl methacrylate-base polymer as a core and a polymer having a lower refractive index than the core as a sheath is formed by composite spinning using a vinylidene fluoride-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer contg. 5-50wt% methyl methacrylate-base polymer as a sheath component. The sheath component has superior heat resistance, chemical stability and mechanical strength as a fluorine-contg. polymer, and it has remarkably superior transparency and a low refractive index, so a plastic optical fiber with small loss and superior optical transmission characteristics in the visible light region is obtd. |
