A fleece constructed from non-woven, randomly oriented flax fibres is mfd. from flax fibres produced by dry breakage and swingling of the flax stems to remove wood by opening the fibre bundles mechanically, so as to leave the pectins and lignin material bonded to the fibres, bringing the fibres so produced into fleece form and after mixing with a binder (partic. an aq. dispersion of a butadiene-styrene copolymer), subjecting the fleece to a heat treatment, partic. at 60-70 degrees C. By eliminating the usual flax retting process, the pectins and lignin remain in the fibres and enable the addition of binder to be kept to a relatively small amount. Furthermore the flax treatment process is simplified and atmospheric pollution or effluent problems eliminated. |
