PURPOSE:To increase apparently the Kerr rotation angle, by forming a reflective film consisting of Ag, Au, Cu, Al, Bi, Sn, stainless, or the like on the rear face of a thin film which consists of a rare earth transition meta alloy and has an axis of easy magnetization vertical to the film surface. CONSTITUTION:A photomagnetic recording medium 2 which consists of a rare earth transition metal and has an axis of easy magnetization vertical to the film surface is formed on a transparent substrate 1, and a reflective film 3 is formed on the recording medium 2. When the refractive index of the transparent substrate 1 is denoted as (n) and the reflected light due to multiple interference generated on the interface between the transparent substrate 1 and the photomagnetic recording medium 2 and the interface between the recording medium 2 and the reflective film 3 is regarded as a virtual reflected light on the interface between the transparent substrate 1 and the recording medium 2 and the virtual refractive index causing this virtual reflected light is denoted as N, ¦N-n¦ is set to a value smaller than ¦N0-n¦ where the refractive index of the recording medium is denoted as N0. |
