The invention relates to (8S)-8-fluoroerythronolide A, (8S)-8-fluoroerythronolide B and 3-0 mycarosyl- erythronolide B, which are used as substrates in the production of macrolide antibiotics. The invention further relates to a process for the preparation of said substrates by reacting an erythronolide hemiacetal with a compound capable of generating electrophilic hydrogen and by opening the acetal with aqueous acid. The invention further relates to the abovementioned acetals and hemiacetals.
