PURPOSE:To reduce variation in torque at the time of engine switching in order to improve maneuvaerability of the engine by providing time-lag for an operation changing cylinder of engine with variable no. of cylinder in which the number of cylinders in operation can be increased or decreased by more than two simultaneously, depending on the load, and thereby switching the number step by step. CONSTITUTION:Out of eight cylinders of an engine E, four cylinders capable of stopping their operation are provided with solenoid valves 8 (80, 81, 82 and 83), which regulate the feeding or discharging of working oil to a hydraulic tappet of each intake or exhaust valve 6, so that a No. of cyliners control unit 10 can control the solenoid valve 8, according to operation status signals from various sensors. The solenoid valves 81-83 of three cylinders out of the said four cylinders are provided with times T1-T3 whose time delay is different with each other. When the number of cylinder in operation should be switched from 8 to 4, etch cylinder stops one by one with the predetermined lag time, alleviating the variation in torque. At the time of the quick acceleration, transistors Q0-Q4 are turned ON, thereby instantly realizing an all-engine-in-operation state, by which good accelerating performance can be maintained. |
