<p>The turbine efficiently uses the available wind since it is more efficient to use several small rotors than one large one, the mass of a Darrieus rotor increasing in proportion to the cube of the dia., while the energy obtained increases only in proportion to the square. A four rotor version has the rotors mounted on axes which form a square with sides at 45 degrees to the vertical. The points of the square are supported by a mast and cross-member. The axes of the two rotors on each side are coupled together by universal joints, and the two sides are connected via a gearing system to the drive shaft of an electric generator. The coupling ensures that the four rotors are in synchronism, thus reducing vibration and air turbulence to a min.</p> |
