In this overcurrent protection device, it is assumed that the semiconductor switch (5) which is to be protected against overcurrent is connected in series with an inductor (6) which is used for current limiting. In order to identify an overcurrent, the voltage dropped on the inductor (6) is measured with the aid of a sensor winding (9) or of a measurement transformer (12) and is supplied to a threshold-value switch (10). If a high voltage occurs, the threshold-value switch (10) drives a control unit (11) of the semiconductor switch (5) in order to disconnect the overcurrent. <IMAGE>
