Poly(ethylene terephalate) was extruded at 290≦̸C through 34 spinneret orifices each consisting of 8 slots 0.089 mm long and 0.285 mm wide arranged radially about and intersecting at a central point. The extruded filaments were passed downwardly through a 1.5-mm-long quench zone supplied with air to 20≦̸moving at 15 m/min. The solidified fial ments were withdrawn from the molten stream at 1500 m/min, treated with a conventional finish, and wound on a bobbin. The polymer metering rate was adjusted so that 180 denier yarn was collected on the bobbin.
