The liquid-crystal element described consists of a housing with transparent discs and electrodes, polarisation foils, orientation films, plus a smectic ferro-electric liquid-crystalline material. This FLC material is dielectrically positive (i.e. DELTA epsilon >0), with the result that the liquid-crystal element has a high contrast and, in addition, is switchable even when high voltages (e.g. greater than 15 V) are applied. Unlike LC elements with dielectrically negative material, no change in surface texture occurs under such conditions. The increase in the effective cone angle produced by applying an electric field to the element described above can also be used to produce so-called grey shades.
