A supplementary drive, which can also be retrofitted, for vehicles, in particular wheeled vehicles, is proposed. The supplementary drive is mounted in such a way that the rotation of the wheel to be driven cannot be adversely affected. In the case of two-wheeled vehicles, in particular bicycles, the supplementary drive cannot lead to a displacement of weight on one side. In this case, flywheels can be drive-connected, in a disengageable fashion, to one of the running wheels to be driven, are mounted outside the tread of the said wheels and are attached on a shaft which receives between the two drive wheels a drive roller which is connected fixed in terms of rotation to the said shaft and can be coupled to the tread. Only a few millimetres of actuator travel is sufficient to disconnect the drive connection. The mounts for the shaft are displaceable radially with respect to the axis of the running wheel to a limited degree by means of a handle which extends as far as the handlebars or steering device. So that the flywheels do not lose rotation during braking, when the brakes are actuated the drive roller is automatically uncoupled from the tread, as a result of which the flywheels rotate freely. The flywheel effect which is then stored can be used after the braking process to get the vehicle or bicycle moving again more quickly and in a more energy-saving fashion.
