Hand-held appliances for drying hair have an electric motor-driven air-flow generator (3, 3a) and a heating device (2, 5) which heats the air flow generated. In order to make the hand-held appliance independent of the main electricity supply, the electric motor (3) of the air flow generator is battery-powered and the heating device (2, 5) has a gas burning point (5) which is fed from a gas reservoir (8), preferably integrated in the hand-held appliance, and downstream of which a heating element (2) is arranged which promotes the combustion and prevents flames emerging with the air flow. <IMAGE>
