PURPOSE:To enable the high speed spinning of an optical fiber, by placing a pair of pinch rolls between the furnace for heating the optical fiber preform and a die having integral closed structure, and feeding a fiber stock by the rolls, thereby passing the fiber stock preformed to a desired diameter at the initiation of spinning through the die. CONSTITUTION:The lower end of the optical fiber preform 12 is heated in the heating furnace 13, and the sagging softened end is pinched with a pair of pinch rolls 28, which are rotated to stretch the preform. When the diameter is reduced to the size capable of passing through the die 29, the rolls 28 are stopped temporarily, the off-grade part produced so far is cut off, and the rotation of the rolls 28 is started again to pass the fiber stock 14 through the die 29 and the drying furnace 19. The dried fiber is wound around the spinning roller 16, and its end is connected to the winding reel 15. The pinch rolls are opened to release the fiber stock, the coating resin 17 is pressured into the die 29, the furnace 19 is operated, and the spinning is carried out by rotating the reel 15 as well as the roller 16. |
