The method of stopping the operation of one or more cylinders of an internal combustion engine, controls the rocker arm (1) which operates the inlet valve (10) for the cylinder. The valve is lifted by a spring around the top (10a) of its stem so that it is held in contact with the tip (16) of the rocker arm. This arm has an extension (2) which is in contact with a cam (11) in the camshaft (12). The rocker arm is disconnected from this extension to give the desired action. The shaft (13) carrying the rocker arm also carries a collar with ratchet teeth on a contact face, which engage teeth on the face of a boss on the rocker arm, driving it. A forked slider (8) on a parallel spindle (7) engages a projecting part (1a) of the rocker arm. When the spindle is shifted axially, the slider shifts the rocker arm axially along its spindle (13) so that its ratchet teeth are disengaged from the boss carrying the extension (2) so that it is no longer operated by the cam.
|
