The three position switch is at rest in the dipped beam position and is moved through the flash position to the high beam. The lighting main switch may also be on the stalk. The object is to avoid direct switch-on to the high beam position and to have flash in one direction from rest and high in the other direction, e.g. rest centre with one up and one down. The three positions (I,II,III) leave the main leaf spring contact units (16) at rest, then pivot it (16) down against the first contact (33) but leaving it in contact with one side (18,30) because the pressure is insufficient to overcome the central spring (39), and finally the pressure overcomes the spring (39) in position (III). In this third position (III) the central leaf spring (16) remains in contact with the first contact (22,33) and leaves the second side contact (18 from 30). The spring (39) is compressed and the first contact (33) leaf spring (35) is pressed down against an end stop (38) with the central leaf spring (16) also hitting and end stop (36).
