Application of compartmented ebullated bed reactor - to conversion of hydrogen and carbon mon:oxide to alkane(s) and alkanol(s)

A process for catalytic conversion of H2 and CO to hydrocarbons or to methanol or other primary alcohols uses a reactor following FR Appn. 79 17947. This has an ebullated bed of solvent (e.g. a hydrocarbon) and catalyst pellets, through which the reactant gases rise. The bed is compartmented by at least two horizontal partitions, each having many small openings and at least one large one. Catalyst particles are normally prevented from falling through the latter by a stream of H2-contg. gas or hydrocarbon released beneath it. Periodic interruption of this stream gives a downward catalyst flow. Conversion of reactants is higher than in a simple ebullated bed.
