The working surfaces of the two grinding wheels (11) lie in parallel planes, the spacing between which corresponds to the spacing between the workpiece surfaces to be surface-ground. The mutually parallel wheel axes lying in a common plane are arranged at a spacing (d) from each other, with the result that the wheels overlap. The wheels (11) are driven at the same speeds in opposite directions. The feed of the workpieces (12) to the overlapping or grinding zone (S) is carried out in the region of that extreme (A) of this zone in which the circumferential directions of rotation of the two wheels are mutually opposite. This results in workpieces being conveyed automatically in the direction of the other extreme (B) of the grinding zone. A guide (13b) opening, at right angles to the plane (a) of the wheel axes, into the introductory extreme region (A) ensures the correct workpiece feed, while a hood (14) partially covering the wheel circumference ensures the discharge of the workpieces in the other extreme region (B). This surface-grinding machine is particularly suitable for surface-grinding thin workpieces, e.g. piston rings. <IMAGE>
