The shell or projectile has a front part contg. the fuse and a guide part attached to the front part by a shaft. The guide part has fins to stabilise the projectile in flight. The shaft has a constriction (16) near the front part to allow the shaft to break at this point. The constriction is formed by laser beam or electron beam irradiation and forms a circular groove around the shaft. The constriction allows the front part of the shell to break away from the guide part if the front part becomes active as a result of unforeseeable conditions in the barrel of the gun. Both parts of the projectile can, therefore, leave the gun without damaging the barrel.
