PURPOSE:To enhance mechanical strength and to prevent breakage of a carrier end part due to vibration by decreasing the porosity of an outer peripheral part containing a outer peripheral wall of a catalyst carrier comprising the honeycomb structure smaller than that of other part. CONSTITUTION:The porosity of gas pores 2 of a peripheral part containing an outer peripheral wall of the catalyst carrier substrate 1 comprising the honeycomb structure is adjusted so as to be smaller than that of a carrier base part 1 as well as a ceramic material containing a small amount of a flux component closely adhering said ceramic material to interiors of said pores and partition walls is filled in said gas pores to form the ceramic hoenycomb structure. The obtained ceramic honeycomb structure has an impact breaking energy value maximum about three times larger than that of an untreated one and about two times larger than that of one of which only an outer periphery is coated. Therefore, if clamping pressure when said honeycomb structure is enclosed into a container is increased, said honeycomb structure is not broken and, further, if the vibration is imparted to said carrier in the container, the cracking thereof can be prevented. |
