APPARATUS AND PROCESS FOR PRODUCING A LOW DENSITY SPRAY DRIED PRODUCT

An apparatus for producing a low density spray dried product, including a spray nozzle having a central aperture and slotted apertures radiating out from the center. The spray dried product comprises beads which have the generally irregularly shaped central portion, formed by the central aperture and at least one nodule disposed on the central portion formed by the slotted apertures. The process for producing the spray dried product includes the steps of spraying a liquid mixture of the product through a noncircular orifice and collecting the resulting product. The instant apparatus also provides effective means for reducing the density of a product which may be in excess of the density required for a particular use.
