Continuous process for prestressing mine shaft winding cables - using friction windlasses running at different speeds

Appts. for pre-stressing wire cables, partic. mineshaft winding cables, as a continuous process, comprises two friction windlasses, the second turning at a faster rate than the first, to produce a constant static loading of the cable as it is reeled from one storage drum to another. The cable may further be subjected to dynamic loading by means of a reciprocating deflection roller which bears on the cable as it passes between the two windlasses. The appts. is less expensive and relatively compact in comparison with prior art, and gives a more uniform treatment along the length of the cable than the older, intermittent process.
