The rudder consists of a fixed section to which a flexible aerodynamically shaped rear section is joined. A steering arm links a reinforcing plate to the tiller. The forward movement of a boat relative to the water exerts a dynamic pressure on to the sides of the rudder when turning, and also forms turbulence around the stern. The shape and the flexing of the rudder reduce the effects of pressure, and therefore reduce loss of forward motion when going about, an important factor in competition racing.
|
