To protect a function unit e.g. motor vehicle from unauthorized operation, a predetermined digital code is scanned from a key and/or card by a scanner located in an unlocked region of the function unit and the scanned code is compared with a stored code in a locked region of the function unit. If the two codes are identical, locks on the function unit are unlocked and other parts of the unit may be rendered operative. If not, an alarm is given. <IMAGE>
