The device consists of a tubular shell made of two parts which can be joined, each carrying turns segments distributed into two coil portions. The ends of the turns segments (25, 26, 25A, 26A) of one portion are connected to the ends of the turns segments (27, 28, 27A, 28A) of the other portion by longitudinal straight wires (31, 32, 33, 31A, 32A, 33A) with the exception of two ends (H, J) serving to connect a coil portion of one of the shell parts to the other coil portion of the other shell part, and of two other ends (A, S) which serve as current inlet and outlet respectively. This arrangement makes it possible to use the device to check long articles whose ends are inaccessible or are fatter than the part to be checked. <IMAGE>
