A crystalliser column for massecuite in the sugar industry has several decks of conical plates, with every other cone inverted. Each apex of an inverted cone forms with a vertical paddle mixer shaft, and the outward edge of each normal cone forms with the column wall the annular slots for the massecuite passage. The paddles are hollow and receive, together with their shaft, a coolant in counter flow to the massecuite. This creates a clearly defined passageway for the massecuite so that the heat transmission is improved and a high throughput is achieved without excessive input for the paddle mixer.
|
