PURPOSE:To simply peel and remove primary scale on the surface of a steel slab by locally heating a portion of the slab on which the scale is present with a burner or the like to apply a difference in thermal expansion between the scale and slab. CONSTITUTION:An ingot is soaked in a soaking pit and bloomed to a slab. The slab is then shot blasted to thoroughly remove secondary scale formed at the blooming. Part of primary scale formed at the soaking is removed by the shot blasting, most of the scale, however, remains on the slab. Next a portion of the slab on which the primary scale remains is locally heated with a burner, whereby the scale floats from the slab because of its larger coefficient of thermal expasion than that of the slab itself. The floated scale is then peeled and removed by spraying a high press. gas. Accoringly, unit of a grinder is reduced in a later process of grinding the slab. |
