A hydraulic clamp is used for holding a workpiece on the bed of a power press or on the anvil of a power hammer during forming operations. The clamp (1) consists of a metal block (4) with a longitudinal rectangular recess (3) for the clamping plate (5). A row of circular recesses (12) is formed in the floor of the rectangular recess (3). A piston (19) with a sealing ring (23) is fitted in each recess (12). The recesses (12) are connected to each other by small passageways (13) which are in turn connected to a high pressure hydraulic pump. Pressure is exerted on the pistons (19) which is directly transmitted to the clamping plate (5). Transverse bolts (9) engage grooves in the edges of the clamping plate (5) to retain it in the block (4).
