The plug and socket pipe connection has resilient fingers (5) on the plug whose ends have radially outward plugs (5a). When the plug is inserted into the socket, the lugs are pushed radially outwards by a seal (11) to engage recesses (6) in the socket and so retain the plug in the socket. The seal is an O ring on a tubular part of the plug forward of the lugs. Pressure (F3) in the pipes causes the O-ring to move and push a conical member (12) into engagement with the lugs so that they are urged radially outwards.
