Lead battery grids are cast continuously in a machine consisting of a rotating drum bearing the grid negative on its circumference, which is partially enclosed by a smooth graphite shoe completing an enclosed mould cavity, and a device for the continuous feeding of molten metal into the mould cavity so formed. Both the casting drum and the shoe are water cooled. Molten metal is supplied from a molten pool kept at a constant level which is made to overflow over a weir type dividing wall into the casting cavity by the action of an eccentrically mounted rotating cylinder which dips into the melt in its lowest position making it overflow. The method permits the production of frames only 0.04 in. thick having a median strip cross section of 0.025 in. The choice of graphite for the shoe minimizes leakages. |
