Granular, nonmetallic, hard materials are coated at a high temp. with metals by:- (a) degassing the mixed materials, in vacuo; (b) activating by heating or a glow discharge in H2 or cpds. evolving H2 when heated; (c) cooling in H2; (d) heating with motion in a halogen atmos. to 500-1100 degrees for coating; (e) removing the halogen atmos. by suction above 500 degrees C; (f) cooling the solid mass in an inert atmos. Useful for (synthetic) diamonds, B nitride, Si carbide, corundum, etc. Used in mfr. tools, where materials (1) are coated with metals (2) for better adhesion and heat conduction in a matrix. The coated material (1,2) can subsequently be electroplated with e.g. Cu, Ni, Ag, or their alloys.
|
