The liquid-crystal cell contains as liquid-crystal material a "guest"/"host" mixture with a pleochroic colour material, the liquid-crystal material being arranged in the form of a thin layer between two electrodes (2', 2'') connected to an external driver circuit. The electric field present between the electrodes (2', 2'') in the switched-on state of the cell effects a change in the molecular alignment and thus in the optical properties of the liquid-crystal material. The electrodes fix a negative image of the display element, i.e. the shape of the display element is fixed by a region of the "guest"/"host" mixture which is not subjected to the influence of the electric field. The display device can be detected as a coloured region in the switched-on state of the cell which is surrounded by a surface which has become colourless under the influence of the electric field. It is therefore possible to achieve a positive display even when a "guest"/"host" mixture with positive electrical anisotropy is used. <IMAGE>
