The charger comprises a transformer (23) in the secondary circuit with an uncontrolled rectifier (25) arrangement as well as a current and voltage metering unit whose outputs are combined and connected to a voltage reference zener diode. A compensation current circuit is connected in parallel with the voltage reference zener diode (40) to adjust for any voltage drop on the battery charging lines. The compensation current circuit is made up of series connected diode and resistor and is inserted into the circuitry between the cathode and anode of the zener diode reference element via the load resistors of a current transformer belonging to the current control circuit.
