The ratchet plug spanner is for use on motor cycle engine sparking plugs, and comprises a demountable assembly of a socket head (A) and a radial hand lever (B). The hand lever can be removed once a plug is unscrewed and the socket used to handle a hot plug. The socket head incorporates a ratchet wheel, and the hand lever a radial pawl. The socket-head (A) constitutes a box spanner (2) with the ratchet-wheel built axially into the haunch. The ratchet wheel has radial teeth (5) and is traversed by an axial hole (4). An intermediary flange (6) delineates the teeth (5) and a spigot (3) which enters the haunch of the socket (2). The size of the hole (4) is such as to clear a plug insulator.
