Three sheets, such as sheet 10, 11, 12, each consisting of a plurality of identical plates joined by short strips are used in the manufaeture of a stack of electrodes. The separator 12 comprises a zig-zag sheet, the plates of which are so formed that the line joining the centres of two adjacent plates is perpendicular the line joining the centre of one of these plates and the centre of its other adjacent plate. As shown in Fig. 2 the end plate 12a of a sheet 12 of separator material is first sandwiched between the end plate 10a of a sheet 10 of negative electrode material and the end plate 11a of a sheet 11 of positive electrode material. The sheet 12 is then folded over so that plate 12b is superposed on plate 11a. Sheet 10 is then folded so that plate 10b is superposed on plate 12b. The folding operation is continued in this manner to produce a stack of alternate positive and negative electrodes spaced apart by separator plates. In Fig. 10, the electrode sheets (23, 24) are in the form of parallel-sided tapes, no interconnecting strips being provided, whereas the separator sheet (25) is of stepped form. In Fig. 11 (not shown) the electrode sheets comprise interconnected oval plates and the separator sheet comprises interconnected disc-shaped plates. In Fig. 13, (not shown) the individual plates are in the form of polygons e.g. octagons. Instead of the plates and interconnections being formed integrally they may be formed separately and then joined. |
