1428258 Domestic refuse compactor MAXON INDUSTRIES Inc 15 May 1973 [17 May 1972] 23011/73 Heading B8C A refuse compactor, for use as a domestic garbage can, comprises a rigid container 1, a pressure plate 6 within the container that is movable in opposition to a wall of the container for compacting refuse between said pressure plate 6 and said wall, means 11 for sealing that portion of the interior volume of the container that is covered by the pressure plate 6 against atmospheric pressure comprising a member of an air-impervious flexible sheet material carried by said pressure plate to extend beyond the periphery of said pressure plate to bear on wall surfaces of said container that are external to that portion of the internal volume of the container that is covered by said pressure plate, and a power means 13, 14 connected to evacuate air from the container between said pressure plate and said wall to bias said member into air-sealing engagement with said wall surfaces and to effect movement of said pressure plate for compacting refuse. As shown, a removable lid 3, having a skirt 5 to engage the upper rim of the container, accommodates the plate 6 when the latter is retracted, by three reel tapes 7 and associated constant-tension spring rolls 8, into the lid, and also an electric motor 12 and vacuum pump 13 the input of which is connected to a sprial of flexible tubing 14 having its other end connected to an opening 15 in a disc component 9 of the plate 6. The pump 13 discharges, at 16, directly into the space between the lid 3 and the plate 6 the said space communicating with atmosphere through openings 17 in the lid. The L-shaped sealing member 11 has one limb clamped between the disc 9 and an associated corrugated face plate 10, the other limb resiliently engaging the container wall. The face plate 10 has a series of openings 21, a relief opening 18, controlled by a solenoid valve 19 being provided in the disc 9. To operate the compactor a timer switch (22) in a control circuit, Fig. 4, not shown, is switched on by a key (23) to energize the motor (12) so that the pump (13) draws a vacuum in the container space below the pressure plate 6 which consequently is urged downwardly, by atmospheric pressure, acting upon its upper face, the relief opening 18 being closed by the solenoid valve 19 which is connected in the circuit of the motor 12. The control circuit includes microswitches (25) which switch off the motor (12) if the plate 6 tilts excessively and microswitches (27) which prohibit the energizing of the motor 12 when the lid 3 is not properly fitted to the container. In a modification, Fig. 5, the pressure plate 29 is connected to the lid 31 by a flexible bellows 30 to form an expansible chamber which is open to the atmosphere through an opening 32, vacuum being suppliable to the whole interior of the container 1 by the vacuum pump 13 connected to an opening 34 in the cover 31 which sealingly engages the container 1. |
