Androstane derivs

Androstane derivs. are of formula: (in which the gp. X-Y are: each R being alkyl or aryl and may contain an OH gp., or both R groups may together form an ethylene gp. and when A has the structure C=O and X-Y is satd., a double bond may be present between the C atoms 4 and 5). They are prepd. by oxidation of an amino-steroid to give a 20-hydroxy deriv. which is then reduced using complex aluminium hydrides.
