A Pseudomonas strain (No. 5742, ATCC 21174) is fermented under submersion, preferably at 36-38C, to give a mass containing 60-80% protein of high nutritional value. The substrate may be either hydrocarbon (natural gas, kerosin, gas oil, etc., containing at least 10 vol.-% of normal paraffins; an emulsifying agent is not needed) or carbohydrate (glucose, molasses, starch, etc.) Urea or NH4 salts serve as N source; no organic additives are needed. |
