2,3-dihydrofluoranthrene as drug intermediate - prepn from fluoranthene by treatment with sodium and alcoholic acid

of formula:- is prepd. by treatment under N2 of fluoranthrene with alkali metal in a hydrocarbon solvent at 100-140 degrees then decomposing the prod. with alcoholic acid, removing the solvent to give a mixt. of fluoranthrene, and its dihydro- and tetrahydro derivs. from which 2,3-dihydrofluoranthrene can be isolated by forming an adduct with a sec. amine, e.g. piperdine, morpholine or pyrrolidine and heating this at 100 degrees in vacuo. Treating the reaction mixture with benzaldehyde gives the 1-benzyl-2,3-dihydro-fluoranthrene.
