PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a height adjusting mechanism for a vehicle seat having a high degree of freedom in designing, capable of locking its rear link without impairing rigidity. SOLUTION: A coupling shaft 18R in the rear to couple right and left rear links rigidly is fitted with a pinion 26-2 and a sector gear 28-2 even at a side opposite to a driving means in the same manner as that on the driving means side, and a lock gear 32 is installed coaxially with the pinion. At normal times, an engaging tooth part 34a of an engaging member is separated from the lock gear 32 by the biasing force F of a compression spring 36, and a rear link 16R-2 is made swingable. However if inertia is generated by a rear-end collision, the engaging member 34 slides owing to the inertia against the biasing force F to cause an engaging tooth 34a to mesh with the lock gear 32, and the rear link 16R-2 is locked indirectly through the lock gear.
