The sensors are thermo elements arranged vertically one above the other in the vessel, one (the reference) element being permanently immersed and always measuring the liquid temp. whereas the others measure liquid or gas temp. according to the liquid level. - Each in turn is connected, together with the reference element, to a differential amplifier and when the output of this is first zero, the stepping selector switch is halted, and visual indication shows the liquid level. - The liquid is e.g. liquid Na.
